Sustainable Use
Creating and managing networks of marine protected areas is an important part of protecting our ocean wilderness. So is sustainable use of our marine and coastal resources in all areas of the seas. Protected areas alone cannot be successful in conserving marine health and biodiversity if unsustainable resource use and extraction activities continue beyond their boundaries. For this reason, CPAWS-NS also encourages management, planning, and industry practices that serve to maintain marine biodiversity.
SeaChoice sustainable seafood program
CPAWS is part of Sustainable Seafood Canada, a coalition of leading Canadian conservation organizations working together via the SeaChoice program to raise public awareness of the threats to oceans and the solutions that sustainable fisheries offer. Environmental assessments
CPAWS-NS has participated in the environmental assessment of a number of projects with the potential to impact Nova Scotia's marine and coastal environments. We endeavour to ensure that the full environmental costs of any project are given due consideration, and that every effort is taken to limit impacts on wilderness and wildlife. Some of the projects that we have been involved in include the Whites Point Quarry and Marine Terminal project proposed for Digby Neck, and the Deep Panuke Offshore Gas project proposed for the Scotian Shelf.
