10 days left to vote for Bay of Fundy as New Wonder of Nature
Halifax – The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) is encouraging all of its supporters to vote for the Bay of Fundy in the international New7Wonders of Nature campaign (votemyfundy.com). The Bay of Fundy is the only Canadian destination in the running and one of only 28 finalists in a campaign that started with over 400 entrants.
Voting ends on November 11th, and the winners will be announced shortly afterwards. The winners are selected entirely by popular vote.
“At CPAWS, we strongly believe that the Bay of Fundy is a global treasure. It deserves the distinction of becoming one of the new seven wonders of nature just as much as other finalists like the Great Barrier Reef, the Galapagos Islands and the Grand Canyon,” says Rodrigo Menafra, marine conservation coordinator for CPAWS-Nova Scotia.
The Bay of Fundy, with the world’s highest tides and rich upwelling zones, supports twelve species of whales including half the world’s population of endangered right whales. It also includes long stretches of undeveloped coastline and important tidal salt marshes, and supports key habitat for migratory birds.
CPAWS Nova Scotia has been working to establish a marine protected area in the Bay of Fundy. This is one of 12 new marine protected areas that CPAWS is challenging the federal government to establish by December 2012 as part of its “Dare to be Deep: Protect Canada’s Oceans” campaign (cpaws.org/campaigns/dare-to-be-deep). With less than 1% of our oceans protected, Canada lags far behind other countries in marine conservation.
Vote for the Bay of Fundy in the international competition, and add your voice to CPAWS’ campaign for 12 new marine protected areas by December 2012 to show the Government that you support the protection of the Bay of Fundy and other precious Canadian marine treasures.
