Promises of Ocean Protection Not Being Met

12 May 08

Canada has made several national and international commitments to complete a network of Marine Protected Areas by 2012. These commitments were made by three federal departments responsible for marine conservation – Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), Parks Canada and Environment Canada. Despite these promises, less than 1% of Canada’s oceans are currently protected. The conservation measures currently put in place are not nearly enough to protect our valuable marine habitats and species from the increasing threats of over-fishing, large-scale industry and pollution. The promises in Canada's Oceans Strategy of ‘integrated management’ and the ‘precautionary approach’ are not being met in Nova Scotia.

Ashley Sprague, Marine Conservation Coordinator, and Martin Willison, past president of CPAWS Nova Scotia Chapter spoke to this issue on CBC Radio's Information Morning today.
