The Blue Mountain – Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area is a wild and rugged wilderness only minutes from downtown Halifax. It contains over a dozen lakes, almost 50 wetlands, pockets of old-growth forest, rare plants, habitat for the endangered mainland moose, the highest point of land on the Chebucto Peninsula, and the only canoe-loop near the city where multiple lakes can be paddled without back-tracking. It contributes to a healthy and green city, helps combat urban sprawl, and provides lots of low-impact recreational opportunities to residents and visitors.
The Halifax Regional Municipality has also expressed an interest, through the Regional Municipal Planning Strategy, in acquiring adjacent lands to expand the protected wilderness and create a regional park.
