Bay of Fundy
The Bay of Fundy is a globally significant ecosystem, containing the world’s highest tides and important habitat for whales and migratory shorebirds. Salt marshes found along the coastline offer protection against storm surges and act as a carbon sink, removing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This incredible body of water lies on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq, Wolastooiyik, and Peskotomuhkati.
Other important features include:
- Cultural, economic, and recreational values
- Productive mudflats
- Critical habitat structures
- Productive fishing grounds
- Significant ecological value and biodiversity
Despite its ecological significance and the important role it plays for coastal communities, very little of the Bay of Fundy is currently protected. CPAWS-NS supports the need for a conservation mosaic and protected area establishment in the Inner and Outer Bay of Fundy region.
