Blue Mountain – Birch Cove Lakes
Located only a few kilometers from downtown Halifax, Blue Mountain – Birch Cove Lakes (BMBCL) is an ecological gem that has woodlands, barrens, lakes, rivers, and wetlands. BMBCL provides important habitat for wildlife, and is a hotspot for hiking, paddling, snowshoeing, skating, climbing, and other outdoor activities. Mi’kmaq people have been caretakers of this land since time immemorial, with many old portage routes throughout the area.
CPAWS-NS helped see through the designation of Blue Mountain Birch Cove Lakes as a Wilderness Area in 2009, with expansions added since. Now, this near-urban wilderness is proposed to become Nova Scotia’s very own national urban park. As a national urban park, BMBCL would become more accessible for everyone living in K’jipuktuk, Halifax.
