About the organization: 

The Nova Scotia Chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS-NS) is a non-government organization that works to establish protected areas on public lands and waters. We have helped to establish over 200 protected areas in Nova Scotia. Our work involves undertaking scientific surveys in the field and communicating those results to the public, local communities, and decision-makers in government. CPAWS-NS is a local chapter of a national charitable organization that has 13 chapters across Canada and was founded in 1963. CPAWS-NS is based in the unceded traditional territory of the Mi’kmaw people. We are committed to operating in a way that upholds justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Role and responsibilities: 

CPAWS-NS is hiring a Conservation Assistant to our conservation team to assist with fieldwork and data collection and analyses in the 2025 field season. This work will involve travelling to remote locations in Nova Scotia, to work with a team of scientists who are collecting field observations from forest, coastal, and marine environments. We are seeking someone who enjoys spending time outdoors and has previous experience undertaking fieldwork and data collection in remote places. Some of the fieldwork will involve overnight backcountry expeditions, so the successful candidate must be ready to work in such conditions and be comfortable staying in tents in remote locations. Other fieldwork will involve sea kayaking and travel on coastal boats, so the successful candidate must also be comfortable working near and on the ocean as part of the CPAWS-NS conservation team. Fieldwork will be the main task of this position, so the successful candidate must be able to undertake fieldwork on successive weeks and to assist the conservation team with fieldwork activities.  You will also need to be responsible for collecting data, organizing data, managing data, analyzing data, presenting data, and reaching conclusions about the data. Our work is exciting, but challenging. A successful candidate will have the confidence and skills to undertake and complete fieldwork in support of our conservation campaigns. 

 

Qualifications and expectations: 

Must have: 

  • Eligibility to work in Canada (citizenship, permanent resident, or a valid work permit) 
  • Previous experience undertaking fieldwork and a level of comfort working in a variety of backcountry field environments 
  • Computer skills for organizing, analyzing, and sharing information (Excel, Word) 

Nice to have: 

  • Experience working or volunteering in a non-government organization 
  • Relevant educational experience
