MPA Network Plan
The federal government has a long-standing commitment to establish a network of marine protected areas (MPAs) in Canadian waters, with the goal of protecting 25% of the marine environment by 2025, and 30% by 2030. After years of consulting with rightsholders and stakeholders, the federal government has finally released the Scotian Shelf-Bay of Fundy MPA Network Plan for public comment. You can support marine conservation in Nova Scotia by sending in letters of support for the MPA network plan, and sharing knowledge of specific sites to help further guide the design of the network.
An MPA Network is “a collection of MPAs and other conserved areas that operate cooperatively to safeguard important ecological components of the ocean and marine biodiversity as a whole” (DFO).
